When to worry about your dog's vomiting and diarrhoea
Most one-off vomits and short bursts of loose stool in healthy adult dogs resolve within 12 to 24 hours with rest and bland food. The colour, consistency and timing of what comes out tells you when to wait and when to drive in. Below: the colour-and-consistency guide, the 12-hour rule, the symptoms that mean emergency and the home-care plan that actually works.
This is the canine companion to the cat vomiting guide. Most of the principles cross over, but dogs and cats have different vulnerable conditions, so the calls are slightly different.
Vomit and stool, what the colour tells you
| What you see | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow foamy vomit, empty stomach | Bile, hungry tummy | Small bland meal, monitor |
| White foamy vomit | Mild gastritis, kennel cough | Withhold food 4 hours, bland |
| Vomit with bits of food | Eaten too fast, mild upset | Bland food, slow feeder |
| Bright red blood in vomit | Fresh bleed, mouth or upper stomach | Vet that day |
| Dark coffee-grounds vomit | Digested blood, stomach ulcer or worse | Vet immediately |
| Soft cow-pat stool | Mild dietary upset | Bland food, monitor |
| Watery stool with mucus | Colitis, often stress or food change | Bland food, vet if 48h+ |
| Bright red blood in stool | Lower bowel inflammation, often parasitic | Vet within 24 hours |
| Black tarry stool (melena) | Digested blood, upper bleed | Vet immediately |
The 12-hour rule
For one-off vomiting in a bright, alert adult dog with no other symptoms:
- Withhold food for 4 to 6 hours but keep water available.
- Offer a small bland meal (boiled chicken and white rice, plain, no seasoning).
- If it stays down for 4 hours, offer another small meal.
- Reintroduce normal food gradually over the next 48 hours.
If your dog is bright after 12 hours and keeping food down, you have your answer, it was a one-off upset. If after 12 hours they have vomited again, refused food, become listless, or any of the emergency signs below, that's a vet call. If the bland-food approach has you wondering whether home cooking could be a longer-term option, the vet-approved homemade dog food guide explains what supplements most home diets miss.
When it's an emergency
Tell people when not to wait: any of the following turns “monitor at home” into “drive in now.”
- Repeated unproductive retching with a swollen, hard belly (suspected bloat, see the emergency vet Sydney guide)
- Vomiting blood, bright or coffee-grounds
- Black, tarry stool (digested blood)
- Vomiting plus weakness, collapse, or pale gums
- Suspected toxin (chocolate, raisins, antifreeze, mushroom, plants)
- Puppies under 6 months with vomiting plus diarrhoea (parvo risk, dehydration is fast)
- Persistent vomiting longer than 24 hours, or more than 3 episodes in 12 hours
- Refusing all water, sunken eyes, sticky gums (dehydration)
Home care that actually works
- Plain boiled chicken (no skin, no seasoning) plus white rice. 1 part chicken to 2 parts rice. Small portions.
- Pumpkin (plain canned, no spices) is useful for both diarrhoea and constipation, 1 to 4 tablespoons depending on dog size.
- Probiotics (vet-grade, like Protexin or FortiFlora) for 7 to 10 days during recovery.
- Reintroduce normal food gradually over 2 to 3 days once symptoms have resolved.
- Plenty of water, small frequent sips if the dog is keeping liquids down.
What investigation costs in Australia
The vet payment plans guide covers options for unexpected bills. For chronic GI cases, building a relationship with one regular vet is more useful than chopping and changing.
Straight answers
How long should I wait before going to the vet for vomiting?
If your dog vomits once, looks otherwise bright, drinks water and keeps a small bland meal down 4 hours later, you can wait. If they vomit more than 3 times in 12 hours, refuse water, look weak, or have a swollen belly, go in.
What colour vomit is concerning?
Yellow bile suggests an empty stomach, often resolves with a small meal. White foam often gastritis. Bright red blood is fresh, often from the mouth or upper stomach, vet that day. Coffee-ground brown is digested blood, vet immediately.
Is chicken and rice a real treatment for upset stomach?
It's a brief fast-and-bland approach, not a treatment. 12 to 24 hours of plain boiled chicken and white rice (no seasoning) lets the gut rest. If symptoms haven't resolved in 48 hours, it isn't working, vet.
Can I give my dog Imodium for diarrhoea?
Some vets do prescribe loperamide for dogs at very specific doses, but never for cats (toxic) and never without veterinary guidance. Many causes of diarrhoea are infectious or obstructive, and slowing the gut down can make those worse.
How is dehydration in dogs detected at home?
Pull up the skin between the shoulders, it should snap back in under 1 second. Press the gum gently, the colour should return in under 2 seconds. Dry sticky gums and sunken eyes mean dehydration that needs IV fluids.
When is vomiting actually an emergency?
Repeated unproductive retching with a swollen belly (possible bloat). Vomiting blood. Vomiting plus weakness or collapse. Suspected toxin ingestion. Vomiting in a young puppy. All same-day, often immediate.
Most stomach upsets in healthy adult dogs resolve in 24 hours. The skill is recognising the small fraction that don't. Vomit colour, stool consistency, energy levels and how long it has been going are the four data points that matter. Related: cat vomiting guide, emergency vet Sydney, payment plans.
